African Singing Workshop

On 17 September in the splendour of Retford town hall we hosted singers from the Quirky Choir from Doncaster and the Sheffield Socialist Choir at a workshop of African singing led by Lucky Moyo from Zimbabwe.

Heritage Day 2016

10 September was Heritage Open Day in Retford.  A real stagecoach coach with four horses was in town as part of the celebrations and was held up by Dick Turpin in The Square.  In heavy rain, helped by children from St Joseph's primary school, we sang Janet's songs Turpin Hero and Roam Around Retford.

Sing For Water

On Sunday 12th June twenty of us took part in a mass singing event in the centre of Manchester to raise money for Water Aid.  Along within about 300 others from community choirs all over the north, we sang a set of songs with a watery theme which Janet has been teaching us recently.  All of us sang the songs to about 40 family and friends on 21 June at which a further £150 was raised in donations for Water Aid.

Singing at The Crucible

Five of us joined with around 25 other singers from Janet’s other choirs to form the Poetry Army Choir and take part in a professional performance at the Sheffield Crucible Studio on 2 June.

The show was a review-style celebration of poets and writers who have spoken out against terror and tyranny over many years and in varied situations.   Four professional actors and a musician performed the words with terrific pace and verve, interspersed with our three rousing and inspiring songs, directed by Janet.  This was hard work to learn and rehearse but great fun on the night and it was brilliant to get to know some of the other singers from Sheffield and Doncaster.  It also means our choir is better known out there and we got to see another part of Janet’s busy life!
